Q. When I use color, do I use Pantone colors, spots
or CMYK?
A. Always produce your ad files using CMYK color.
See our Color Swatch above to determine the Volusia Pennysavers
colors available if you order a one color ad.
Remember, when you buy color at our shopper, black is free and
the extra color is considered a one color ad. Example: Black and
Cyan = one color ad.
Q. Why can't we use PMS (Pantone) colors for spot
color?
A. Newsprint presses are designed to provide
the best quality for high volume production. We use Cyan, Magenta,
Yellow and Black ink on our presses rather than buying pre-mixed
colors as commercial printers do. This allows a wider variety
of color options with greater consistency. Any PMS or Pantone
color used in an ad MUST be converted to CMYK colors. However,
many process builds of PMS and Pantone colors look different from
the solid inks. We cannot guarantee a complete match to these
PMS and Pantone colors.
Q. What is dot gain? How does it affect the quality
of my color and halftones?
A. Dot gain is the spread in the diameter of
the halftone dot. All offset printing has some dot gain. On newsprint,
which is a highly porous paper, dot gain is 30-39%. For example,
if a dot area ir tone value of 50% in the film or files image
area measures 80% when printed, it is said to have a dot gain
of 30%. On newsprint paper, a 40% dot may read as high as 70%.
This means your photos ad colors may appear much darker on newsprint
paper than on other types of paper and especially when compared
to your screen.
Q. What line screen and scanning resolution does
The Volusia Pennysaver have?
A. We use 85 lines/inch for
newsprint reproduction. We recommend scanning images at 200
ppi.
Q. Can I send my ad as a velox or as a negative?
A. We strongly prefer ads to be delivered in
electronic format. However, veloxes are accepted using 86 LPI
screen resolution. Registration marks are required on veloxes.
Q. What digital file formats does The Volusia Pennysaver
accept?
A. The Volusia Pennysavers produce all ad files
on Quark Express 5 to produce ads internally. We prefer the PDF
format using the Newsprint Job Options described in this
publication. Any submitted Acrobat PDF file must have all fonts
embedded and all color art must by CMYK. There are precautions
when using this format. Please call us if you have any questions.
Q. I have a PC using the Windows OS to design my
ads. Can I submit these files digitally?
A. We can accept only .tiff, .jpg, or .pdf files
from anyone using a PC to produce their ads. Resolution must be
85 LPI and 200 PPI.
Q. Can I submit files over the Internet?
A. Yes, we are very proud to provide RapidAd
